Philippines’ Duterte to scrap future war games with US

I will serve notice to you now that this will be the last military exercise.

Mr Duterte referred to US President Barack Obama as “the son of a whore” before a world leader’s summit in Laos but later said he was not referring to the world’s most powerful man.

The President insinuated that he’s about to cross a “point of no return” in the Philippines’ relations with the United States, saying he would build new alliances China and Russian Federation to sustain the country’s economy. He made the statement in the course of explaining his earlier remark that he might ask the US Special Forces to leave Mindanao to pave the way for talks with Moro rebels who have historical grievances over abuses suffered at the hands of the US colonial administration.

“But you should not take this as something that is breaking away from our close friendship with the United States or breaking away from our commitments and treaty arrangements with the United States”, he said.

Vietnam pushed for multilateral and bilateral means to resolve the South China Sea dispute, according to Yasay.

In recent weeks, Duterte has been reaching out to Russian Federation and China, and moving away from the United States, a country that has historically been one of its major allies. However, the annual military exercises that involve more USA troops, taking place in April every year, would still continue.

Local media reported that Tony Co, among the inmates tagged by President Rodrigo Duterte as running a drug dealing business from inside the National Bilibid Prison, was killed in a stabbing spree that reportedly broke out when a convicted former police major reprimanded others for using drugs.

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez told reporters both presidents “agreed to really level up the trade that we have by increasing trade numbers”.

Philippine and United States military forces are to conduct military exercises in early October which officials explained, are allowed under two agreements signed by the USA and the Philippines, a former American colony and long-time ally. Also to maintain and promote peace, security and stability and freedom of air and maritime navigation in the region, especially in the East Sea (South China). “We can’t do this on our own”, said del Rosario.

He said Duterte encouraged more Vietnamese businessmen to invest in the Philippines.

As to the joint military drills with the US, Abella said no timetable has been set. However, relations between the two countries have deteriorated under President Duterte, who has expressed his disdain for global criticism over his anti-drugs campaign over the course of which more than 3,000 people have been killed.

Carter stressed, as he has repeatedly in recent months, that the US Navy would continue to ignore China’s territorial claims and sail through waters surrounding the islands. “We just want to implement it in the right way”.

“We’ve agreed like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which the Philippines and Vietnam are members, to respect the rule of law, global law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas”, Yasay said.

The Southeast Asian neighbours agreed a strategic partnership a year ago, in response to China’s more vigorous maritime presence.

He reiterated his stance against the U.S., saying, “Do not pretend to be the moral conscience of the world”.
