Software king of the world Microsoft is planning a natty way of keeping you safer when you browse – it runs edge in a virtual machine.
The main objective of Application Guard is to protect enterprise networks against malicious links by isolating Edge, under certain conditions, to a short-lived copy of Windows that’s also isolated from the underlying hardware.
“Microsoft is charging toward removing the fear and uncertainty of security in the cloud”, said Ric Opal, senior director at Oak Brook, Ill. -based SWC Technology Partners, while it’s also “going to provide the features, benefits and product offerings that customers desire in the cloud”. That means the same application-programming interface (API) calls that developers and operators use to manage Linux containers will work with Windows containers. It will only be used for Edge for the time being.
Last but not least, virtualization comes with performance costs. It’s a technique that limits the damage a malicious code can do when it runs within the browser. “Finance organizations, healthcare organizations, a whole slew of military organizations that I talk to”.
Application Guard should be made available to Windows Insider testers in the near future, with the release of early Redstone 2 builds for Windows 10. “With Windows Defender Application Guard, enterprise users can take advantage of the vast power of Internet sites and services while still protecting corporate and personal data”.
Microsoft also released a new preview of Azure Stack on Monday, which will be generally available in 2017. But right now, the company is working to ship the first version of the feature.
To help Microsoft’s hybrid-cloud customers reduce administrator overhead, the company announced new Azure monitoring capabilities and updates to Operations Management Suite that help them consolidate their cloud and on-premises management.
Apart from this new tool, Microsoft also announced that the Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection has been upgraded and is significantly more capable of protecting users from clicking on malicious URLs.
