The already flood-prone “Holy City” was largely underwater Saturday as Hurricane Matthew passed close to Charleston. “So we’ve now got more than double the number of resources we originally planned”. Georgia Power reports that more than 122,000 of its customers remained without power Monday. The power company said it now has to rebuild parts of the electrical system.

McCrory said that “the storm is not over for North Carolina”. He said President Barack Obama has been in constant contact with him as the storm moved across the state.

In addition to the eight deaths in North Carolina, there were four in Florida and three each in Georgia and SC.
Almost 1 million people in North Carolina and SC were without power, two days after the eye of the hurricane moved out to sea.
“That’s probably well over 1 million people without power”, McCrory said.
“We have people on roofs (there) as we speak”, McCrory said. At least 24 United States deaths have been blamed on Matthew.
Matthew, the most powerful Atlantic storm since 2007, claimed the lives of at least 15 people in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas, including one death near Florence when a driver tried to cross a flooded road and was swept away.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of customers across the South still didn’t have electricity.
That’s down from 625,000 on Sunday and about 825,000 at the height of the storm.
“As of mid-morning Sunday, there were more than 760,000 power outages in central and eastern North Carolina”, according to member station WUNC.

Similar numbers were without power in North Carolina. And North Carolina officials said they had to rescue numerous people from cars and homes. The Waccamaw River was expected to crest 5 feet above flood levels in a few days. The storm killed more than 500 people in Haiti.
