Kaine Praises His Debate Performance, Calls Out Tension Between Trump, Pence

Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican Mike Pence Tuesday night faced off in the only vice-presidential debate in the run-up to the U.S. election, clashing over national security, immigration and other issues.

Trump also praised Pence’s performance, declaring that his running mate had the greatest victory in the history of vice presidential debates. “They think in their focus groups that if they attack, they can win”.

This time, all Kaine had to do was confront Pence with his running mate’s behavior.

“I can’t imagine how Gov. Pence can defend the insult-driven, me-first style of Donald Trump”, said Kaine, the Virginia senator and Hillary Clinton’s No. 2.

“Mike Pence didn’t want to defend Donald Trump, and as Senator Kaine said, if you can’t defend the person at the top of the ticket, how can you ask people to vote for you”, Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta told reporters outside her house.

“I was going after Donald Trump, and Mike Pence kind of was going after Trump with me”.

Bill Clinton – hardly doing any favors for his wife, who has pledged to defend and expand Obamacare – called the president’s signature legislation “the craziest thing in the world”, just days before the former secretary of state and the NY billionaire meet for a second debate showdown.

Pence’s blunt comments on Russia, more in line with thinking by traditional Republicans, came in response to Kaine’s charge that Trump was too cozy with the Russian leader. “That we’re weaker in this world not just because of the president but because of Hillary Clinton’s policies”.

In the more than ten years the two men served together, Aderholt and Pence became close friends.

Gwen Ecklund, Republican chairwoman in Crawford County, Iowa, said Republicans in this conservative western Iowa county have told her they’d like to see Pence at the top of the ticket.
