The club have not confirmed how long Phelan’s contract is.

Junior Stanislas scored twice as Bournemouth thrashed Hull 6-1 at the Vitality Stadium to record their biggest ever Premier League win.

Robertson went on to add. ‘I wouldn’t say enjoy is the right word, in a weird way, just a little bit of satisfaction for a short period of time and then immediately ahead to Tottenham [next Saturday] and that’s how it has to be. Also they have signed two players from Manchester United, striker Will Keane and midfield player James Weir.

Before half-time, Bournemouth had built a two-goal cushion.

“And we’re all aware of the future and we’ve got to do much more”.

And Hull were in meltdown three minutes later as Robert Snodgrass rashly slid into Wilson inside the penalty area and Stanislas emphatically drilled home from 12 yards.

Stanislas’ brace plus goals by Charlie Daniels, Callum Wilson, Steve Cook and Dan Gosling – Ryan Mason getting his first for Hull – extended the Cherries unbeaten run to six matches.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves because if we do it is going to be a hard slog”. Howe was very evasive and brief with his answers and would not name names but had this to say: “We’re anxious about one being long term, but the others shouldn’t be out for too long”. You could either thank Mike Phelan for his efforts and get someone else in, or you could give him the full backing so that he has a clear remit for the rest of the season, which is obviously survival. You know, you come away from home and put in a performance like that… you get punished.

Squad depth is still an issue, with the long-term absences of the likes of Allan McGregor, Alex Bruce and Moses Odubajo reminiscent of what Bournemouth were going through post-promotion a year ago, though the anticipated return of Michael Dawson is a boost.

Former Manchester United assistant manager Phelan first arrived at Hull City in February 2015 when named assistant to Bruce, who this week was appointed manager at Championship side Aston Villa.

“We’ve taken the plaudits of seven points from seven games”, said Phelan.

“I’ve committed myself to this football club, I’ve stood by everything and we don’t want too many more results like we’ve had in the last few weeks, but we need to be stronger mentally and we need to be more disciplined”.

“So it’s a lesson we have to learn and learn quickly”.

It was a dismal day on the south coast for Mike Phelan and Hull
