The film opened to $24.1 million on Friday, including its Thursday night screenings; it corralled $19.3 million on Saturday and took in an extra $16.8 million on Sunday.
And, its good fortune continued this weekend with the opening of “Straight Outta Compton”, which exceeded expectations and made an estimated million.
“Straight Outta Compton” has all the makings of a box office hit with its story, relevance, timing and cast.
The movie is also the best opening ever for a music biopic, exceeding the launch for Johnny Cash drama “Walk the Line” in 2005, which brought in $22.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Starring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr., Aldis Hodge, and Paul Giamatti, Straight Outta Compton chronicles the rise (and fall) of the famous hip-hop supergroup that included Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. Nick Carpou, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, said they were “elated” with the results. Twenty years later, N.W.A.’s story has proven to be a massive hit for moviegoers, and the film has raked in approximately million dollars, a figure that is spectacularly close to Ant-Man’s $57.2-million opening last month.
“To have been looking at his movements and then getting them down”.
N.W.A members shocked the world in 1988 with their debut album Straight Outta Compton which dealt with a brutally honest depiction of life in Southern Los Angeles. The period spy thriller will have an uphill battle to make up its US$80 million production budget. The overall take for 8 Mile was $116 million. Eighty-six percent of our audience was over 25 and 39 percent are over 50, ” he said. The movie stars Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill as agents during the 1960s.
