Concerns about neighbourhood safety have spawned Trunk or Treat parties, where parents decorate their cars in a Halloween theme and hand out treats from the trunk. The app has a Halloween Treat Map so people will know exactly who is giving out candy in their neighborhood.

The DMV suggests that drivers travel residential roads slowly, staying below the posted speed limit.

Police also said costume choices can impact the most important thing when walking outside: a child’s ability to see clearly.

“Children should not run out from parked cars or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines presents danger”.

We would like to remind everyone to try and plan out a trick or treating route. Relatively few people were home, which meant few places to ask for treats.

Never enter anyone’s house or vehicle for a treat.

Children should only go to homes where the porch light is on, which has become a sort of universal signal that trick-or-treaters are welcomed, both the police and Red Cross say.

Zakeena Smith, who brought her children to the event, said the turn out was much bigger than she expected, but the wait in rain didn’t deter her from getting her kids inside to have fun.

Be bright at night – wear retro-reflective tape on costumes and treat buckets to improve visibility. Adults are encouraged to allow their children to draw faces on their pumpkins but to leave the carving for the grown-ups, to avoid injury.

Enjoy yourself, make sure your family has a night to remember, but also make sure to think about keeping them safe. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the grass away from the street.

Excited kids may forget to “stop, look and listen” before crossing the street.

· It’s best to cross the street safely at corners.

Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m.to 9:30 p.m.so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
