Tech issues force county to use manual check

Machine glitches in Durham County led officials to switch to paper ballots in at least five precincts, leading to longer waiting times than expected.

Earlier today, the Durham County elections board voted for a ninety-minute extension county-wide.

But percentages for Democratic and black voters remained lower compared to four years ago. Donald Trump also tweeted about the issue. If that proves accurate, then North Carolina looms large because Clinton can afford to lose Florida and Ohio’s combined 47 Electoral College votes and still win by holding onto all of the other states that voted for Obama.

Clinton running mate, Virginia U.S. Sen. Richard Burr and Thom Tillis, he touted Trump and called on voters to “drain the swamp” of Washington.

There seemed to be a similar resurgence in Nevada, blogged Jon Ralston, the dean of that state’s press corps, who predicted a decisive Clinton victory but said the open-seat Senate race would be tighter.

He appealed to the crowd to make sure other Republicans stick with the party.

There also have been reports of people intimidating voters, including a police officer in St. Louis, Missouri, who may have lacked authority to be in a polling place.

But for many voters outside the Herbert C. Young Community Center, the end of this acrimonious election season can’t come soon enough.

The focus on North Carolina is the result of the state’s demographics, size and voting history.

You do not need to provide a photo ID to vote absentee by mail.

The State Board of Elections will not report statewide election results until the last polls close. And early polling stats confirm it’s working: African American early voting is down 8.5% from 2012.

Longtime Republican consultant Carter Wrenn, a fixture in North Carolina politics, said the GOP’s voter fraud argument is nothing more than an excuse.

The issue arose with the electronic poll books used to check in voters when they present to vote. Both millennials and urban voters have tended to be more Democratic, he said. If any voter is in line to vote at the time the polls are closed, that voter shall be permitted to vote. And of those, 56 percent voted in the GOP contest.

“I am not going to expose people doing their civic duty to help people vote … to public attention, ridicule, and harassment”, she said.

And there’s another wild card: Hispanic voters.
