Republicans Expand Domination of State Legislatures

There is nearly no limit on executive authority in this situation and the primary constraint on legislation is the extent to which Donald Trump and congressional Republicans disagree.

“I would say we have term limits now”.

Senator Bernie Sanders, who challenged Clinton for the Democratic nomination early this year, made it clear a President Trump would have to steer a steady course if he was to expect cooperation from liberals in Congress. “So I’m committed to work with the new majority party and try to resolve these issues”.

To which I present: A wet blanket. His election has already led congressional leaders to admit TPP is likely dead, meaning that the clash probably won’t happen in public.

America’s Health Insurance Plans, or AHIP, a trade association that represents insurers such as Anthem Inc and Cigna Corp in Washington, said late on Tuesday that it would work with any new administration on the issue. Despite this, he was able to position himself as a “man of the people” who can relate to working-class Americans in the face of a “rigged” system, this despite the fact we’re talking about a system in which he is a billionaire.

Republican dominance of the federal government, at least for now, is not in doubt.

This has been driven home especially during the Obama presidency.

From there Trump strolled through the Capitol’s stately Ohio Clock Corridor with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who’d been quick to endorse him but critical of his rhetoric and undisciplined campaign style.

And in retrospect, it looks like sound political strategy.

The Democrats in 1992 won two straight terms; the Republicans came in 2001 and also ruled for 8 years before losing in 2008 to the Democrats again, who also ruled for 8 years before losing this Tuesday to the Republicans.

State Republican Party chairman Matt Borges said he expected Trump to defeat Hillary Clinton in OH, though not by the margins that he did.

“Now the only thing is will the Democrats say, ‘Hey, we wanted to have Merrick Garland, and you Republicans wouldn’t even give him a hearing, so we’re going to filibuster, ‘ And the Republicans have a majority, but they don’t have a filibuster-proof majority, so it’s possible that Democrats, if they are not in a conciliatory mood, could go down that road”, Perry said. They also took a one-seat advantage in the Washington Senate, but they still won’t have operating control, because one Democrat caucuses with the Republicans.

Plus Ryan – who angered Trump supporters in his conference when he said last month he couldn’t defend his party’s nominee – seems to have calmed down Trump backers by his late embrace of the billionaire in the final days of the campaign.

Support for extensive deportation is generally between 15 and 20 percent in polls, with about three-quarters wanting those who have been here for years to stay, and a majority wanting them to be given a path to citizenship.

The moment he proposes a hard-line plan to deal with illegal immigration, Democrats will be incensed. They have proposed creating private accounts and raising the retirement age in the name of making sure the program stays around. Republicans such as Ana Navarro have reportedly voted against Donald Trump, because of his statements about immigrants, women and other topics. Cruz termed Trump’s win “an unbelievable victory for the American worker”. “The government, though, is also going to grind down Donald Trump”. If Trump wants to roll back tide of hate he unleashed, he has a tremendous amount of work to do and he must begin immediately. The Trump victory and retention of congressional control makes it easier for Democrats to blame the GOP for problems.

Borges said he sees Tuesday’s wins as a chance to reshape the Republican Party, though cautioned that the GOP must be mindful not to go too far in any direction. The few in competitive districts in the general election might want to make it work, but they are few.

Republicans also have grown their advantage over Democrats in state voter registration: As of November 1, active registered Republican voters outnumbered Democrats by almost 21,000.

Sen. Mike Thibodeau of Winterport will return as Maine Senate president after his colleagues in the newly seated body elected him unanimously. Since Obama’s first term, news accounts have recorded the decline of state Democratic organizations around the country, a unsafe frailty that became more apparent after the 2010 midterm elections.
