“It’s been a clear indication that Donald Trump was a positive impact in this state and in this building”, Romano said, referring to the state Capitol.
At a press conference in his hometown of Janesville, Wis., Ryan congratulated Trump and called his surprise election victory “the most incredible political feat” Ryan had seen in his lifetime.
On Wednesday, the two top congressional Republicans moved quickly to mend fences with the new president-elect and make the case that Trump will sign their policy agendas into law.
He also cited securing the nation’s borders, improving cyber-security, countering Islamic terror, and identifying waste and fraud in government as priorities.
Some Democrats said they think the party could bounce back and gain the upper hand during redistricting. Some Democratic senators could also be drawn to Trump’s efforts to revamp portions of President Barack Obama’s health care law and tighten curbs on immigrants in the USA illegally. All that flies in the face of Republican Party orthodoxy – and the list goes on. Trump, it has to be said, behaved with much less bombast and much more grace today during his White House and Hill visits than he exhibited on the campaign trail. She beat Republican Rep. Joe Heck, who struggled with sharing the ticket with Donald Trump, first endorsing and then un-endorsing Trump to the disgust of some GOP voters.
“I have been very encouraged by the interest in President-elect Trump to work with my team around numerous issues that this great country faces and I believe that it is important for all, regardless of party and regardless of political preferences, to now come together, work together to deal with the many challenges we face”.
The Republicans had an easier job defending their majority in the House of Representatives, with major USA news outlets projecting the GOP to keep 239 seats in the 435 member group. Voters have elected a Republican state Supreme Court justice.
And on Thursday there was no sign of strain.
“We had a very detailed meeting”, Trump told reporters at a brief photo spray.
Green said Democrats must make a “conscious decision to separate themselves from the corporate villains who are to a large extent funding their campaigns”.
“Clearly there were a number of people who that race turned late”, Guarasci said. “We are going to hit the ground running”.
“I am very disappointed we lost Mike”, McCoy said. And we’re looking at jobs.
Come January, Republicans will have to pivot from trying to block Obama’s initiatives – such as his signature health insurance program Obamacare – to governing along with Trump. As anyone who watched Congress during the Obama era knows, it takes 60 votes to get anything of any significance through the chamber, which means Dems have an opportunity to do exactly what Republicans did when the tables were reversed. The thinking was that Democrats were likely to take control of the Senate. This year, it was at least in part due to Trump’s popularity outside of New York City.
State Senate Majority leader Bob Duff says Republicans must step up and come up with solutions.
But in Mr Ryan, Mr Trump has a built-in policy factory with a largely supportive caucus.

Virginia freshman Rep. Barbara Comstock kept her seat in the Washington, D.C., suburbs despite Democrats’ attempts to lash her to Trump. Yet some establishment Republicans remain convinced that some kind of deal is sorely needed.
