“Mr. President, it was a great honor being with you, and I look forward to being with you many, many more times in the future”, Trump said, adding that he thinks Obama is “a very good man”. He’ll begin occupying the office on January 20.
Obama departs Monday on the six-day trip, stopping first in Athens, where he’ll tour the Parthenon, meet with the prime minister, and give a speech about democracy and globalization that will take on new relevance in light of Trump’s election. Donald Trump has said he would consider seeking advice from Bill Clinton, just days after besting the former president’s wife, Hillary, in the upset U.S. presidential election.
Also on Trump’s schedule was a meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to discuss the GOP legislative agenda. I also think the Clinton camp took the election for granted, as did many voters who assumed only insane people would turn out for Trump.
“We’ve got to filter our surveys as we try to pick out those people that are really going to vote”, he said. The future president said afterward that he told the senator his top three priorities were better control of immigration and the borders, healthcare and jobs. He stands by what he said on the campaign trail.
The White House hopes that by rolling out the red carpet for Trump, they can bind him to some of the conventions of the office. I thought there would be other people protesting.
Mr Engel pointed out that Mr Carter had spent the remaining days of his presidency tirelessly working to free the American hostages in Iran, which ultimately came after Mr Reagan was sworn in.
On Thursday, photographers were not allowed to shoot a meeting between first lady Michelle Obama and Melania Trump, who joined her husband on the White House visit. The practice did not extend to his running mate, Mike Pence, who was followed by a traditional pool of journalists.
The outgoing president and his successor huddled one-on-one in the Oval Office, and then put on a remarkably civil joint public appearance. “We’re on to the next phase”.
The two ended the improbable and historic White House encounter with a handshake and refused to take questions. And, Jon, this was the first time trump appeared in front of the media since the election.
During the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner that year, Obama lit into Trump, mocking him before a ballroom of 2,000 guests and on live television.
The show of civility at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue contrasted with postelection scenes of protests across a politically divided country.
Accusing Trump of racism, sexism and xenophobia, protesters from NY to Los Angeles blocked traffic and chanted slogans like “Not my president” and “We reject the president-elect”. The group was mostly protesting Trump’s win, though there were a smattering of supporters.
He also spoke of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s call acknowledging defeat following the Tuesday vote.
Donald Trump’s explosive temper could bring an already unstable world closer to the catastrophe of nuclear war, a former British intelligence chief has warned. “Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting”.
Trump’s advisers, many of whom were stunned by his unexpected victory, plunged into the huge task of staffing government agencies.

Team Trump unveiled a transition website – www.greatagain.gov – that highlights the human resources challenge facing the incoming administration under the headline “Help wanted: 4,000 presidential appointees”. Obama and Democrats have said they would be open to amendments that could improve Obamacare while maintaining the guarantee of health insurance coverage. “But we don’t have any firm word as to when that will be”. I have great respect.
