System drops heavy snow, zaps mild temps in northern Plains

The first winter storm of the season will be moving into the area on Thursday, lasting until Friday morning.

Jerimiah Moerke with the Minnesota Department of Transportation tells the Fergus Falls Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/2eOAbDd ) that snow and high winds have made it hard for vehicles – especially big rigs – to get up hills on the interstate around Dalton.

The towns of St. Cloud, Fergus Falls, Marshall, Willmar, and Morris were especially forecast to be on the receiving end of some of the heaviest snowfall that could last into the evening, significantly affecting travel conditions, the Star Tribune reported. Snow will mix in earliest in our northwestern counties.

The Northern Rockies and western South Dakota are more likely to be wetter than average.

In Alexandria, there’s a blizzard warning due to not only the snow, but winds are gusting up to 50 miles per hour.

Forecasters predict blizzard conditions beginning Friday across central Minnesota with significant snow accumulation. Heavy wind-driven snow continues Friday and extends into northern Minnesota. In a separate report from the AP, experts anxious that a lack of snow this season could cause reservoirs to run low with less snowmelt in the warmer months.

Lows are forecast to drop into the low to mid-20s in Duluth on Friday night, with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s on Saturday and Sunday.
