Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney calls for respect after drinking controversy

It was reported that the England captain was out socialising until the early hours of last Sunday morning and the fallout rumbled along all last week, drawing negative headlines and comment.

‘He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures’.

Sunderland boss David Moyes has also had his say on a player he managed at Everton and Manchester United. “I think that is the ethical answer and when we are always anxious about ethics and respect and rules, I just said that if it was me making those comments about an Everton player, I would be in trouble”. Nobody says I deserve time, that I deserve credibility, that it’s not a bad result that affects the credibility of somebody with 23 titles in four different countries.

“Honestly, I think there was a Wayne before the Slovakia-England and a Wayne after Slovakia-England”, Mourinho said at the time. He is England’s all-time leading scorer with 53 goals and has made 119 worldwide appearances, the most for an outfield England player.

While incidents like the one that happened to Rooney do happen regularly in football, his is more humiliating due to other news surrounding the England record scorer this week. No one does it any more.

“I know times have changed, I know modern footballers are expected to look after themselves, but everyone needs to grow up a little”.

“Wayne picked up an injury in the game (against Scotland) on Friday”.

“We will be reviewing our policy around free time whilst on worldwide duty”. I rest but the players don’t.

But after United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on 19 November, the 31-year-old accused the press of showing him “a lack of respect”. “Someone will have to review it”.

The paper alleged that Rooney dropped in on a wedding party and they printed a photo appearing to show the Manchester United forward, sporting an England training top, looking the worse for wear.
