Matthews breaks slump with two goals

Beginning Wednesday night in Newark against the New Jersey Devils, the Leafs play four of their next five and five out of seven on the road, where they are just 1-5-3 on the season.

The Maple Leafs are 27th in the league, according to numberFire’s NHL Team Power Rankings, while the Devils check in at 18th.

Matthews, of course, made a spectacular National Hockey League debut with four goals in the Maple Leafs’ season opener. “It was nice to do that”.

The 19-year-old American was relieved to finally end his drought — especially given all the chances hes been getting — but ultimately disappointed with the end result.

Stalberg’s goal was his first in 10 games.

“He looked great”, Devils coach John Hynes said of Cammalleri. “You’re up 3-0 and you come out in the next two plays you make in the second period are basically free gifts”.

“His personality, leadership and impact on the team. His personality and presence was a big factor tonight”. He finished the period with two shots, including a unsafe chance off the rush as the frame wound down. Matthews, Mitch Marner and Nikita Soshnikov could not beat Schneider in the shootout.

Overtime was entertaining, with Schneider stopping Marner in close in the waning seconds.

The jersey is white with four stripes on the arms – three red, one silver – and the team’s crest on the front is outlined in silver. He wasn’t at his best prior to leaving the team but he was heading in the right direction (he had three goals and five shots in his last two games) and certainly picked up where he left off last night.

“It feels good to get that monkey-off-the-back kind of feeling”, Matthews acknowledged.

Coughing up leads wasn’t such a good feeling.

As one would expect in a clash of two former coaching colleagues, each team more or less had the other figured out. It’s something we have to figure out.

The collapses of the early season were often chalked up to this being a young team with quite a bit to learn, and it seems they have done some of that learning after all.

Babcock wished he still had the timeout in the third period because he thought Nick Lappin interfered with Enroth on Auvitu’s goal.

Night after night, day after day, Babcock had patiently assured us it would just be a matter of time before Matthews matched his potential with production. Jake Gardiner’s goal gave the Maple Leafs (8-8-3) a first-period lead. It was also Bennett’s first goal of the season and as a Devil. Kadri was instrumental on the Leafs’ lone goal; he won the battle on the half wall before going to the net and taking Cam Ward’s eyes away on the Gardiner point shot.

The Hurricanes tied the game on a power play goal by Skinner at 17:21 of the first period with Toronto defenseman Connor Carrick serving a holding penalty.

Given that the Leafs have managed as many points as games played with just one road win in the opening quarter of the season and by the team’s own muted public expectations, it has been a significant start for the team. Matthews’ three points were the most by a Devils opponent this season.

Why did Cammalleri miss 6 games?

Also, the puck carrier is forced to pick a side around the first player, which allows for a quick adjustment from the remaining three defenders. After a rough start to the season, Frederik Andersen has been phenomenal in the month of November, hovering around a.930 save percentage. Veteran players who are not part of the Leafs long term future include Matt Hunwick and Roman Polak. The Maple Leafs are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Canadiens in Montreal on Saturday and are expected to use the same lineup on Tuesday.
