Figures show Cyber Monday still the year’s biggest sales day

Adobe Digital Insights predicts that online sales today will exceed $3 billion, an increases of 9.4 percent over past year. Mobile phones accounted for 55 percent of website traffic on Black Friday and 36 percent of sales, according to Adobe.

The data highlights the waning importance of Black Friday, which until a few years ago kicked off the holiday shopping season, as more retailers start discounting earlier in the month and opened their doors on Thanksgiving Day. If those numbers panned out, it means that the amount spent by each individual online shopper on Cyber Monday 2016 showed a sharp increase. With many online retailers kicking off the deals early, consumers took advantage and spent $1.93 billion, an 11.5 percent increase from Turkey Day previous year.

“Shoppers, who are able to browse deals from their homes and get retail alerts on-the-go throughout November, aren’t limited to the traditional midnight line outside of shopping malls”, he said.

Boomerang Commerce, a pricing-data firm, reports that Wal-Mart stocked 66% of Amazon’s most popular toys up from 46% past year.

Much of the online purchases made during Cyber Monday came from mobile devices.

NRF’s Cyber Monday Expectations Survey, also conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics over the weekend, projected 122 million Americans planned to shop online on Cyber Monday – up from the 121 million who planned to participate previous year. This was mainly due to a lower sales base in 2015 for those two days, Adobe said. Toys “R” Us also increased assortments as well as exclusives, while Target focused on special pricing promotions.

This year, McNamara said the company is ready for the traffic.

“They’ve figured out the key, which we’re seeing is really the combination of social and mobile and email”, she said.

Some people did most of their shopping on Black Friday and some saved it for Cyber Monday.

The top-selling electronics on Cyber Monday were the Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox, Samsung 4K TVs, Apple iPhone and Amazon Fire.

Sears announced last week that Cyber Monday sale would begin a day earlier and run a day longer. E-commerce company Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) was offering four times as many deals as Wal-Mart.

“We believe Black Friday weekend represented a modestly positive kickoff to [the] holiday”, Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Trussell said.
