Pelosi cedes some powers to House Dems angry over elections

When asked Tuesday evening if she had the votes to prevail over Ryan, Pelosi bristled at the interrogative. At 76, Mrs. Pelosi is almost twice the age of Mr. Ryan, 43, but with some mileage left before the party trades her for something new. “Tim Ryan had two weeks during the Thanksgiving holiday”, Moulton said. But there’s a more prescient parallel between Ryan and Layne.

The 43-year-old represents a northeast OH district, and argued that the party needs to refocus on the Rust Belt and working-class voters who delivered Trump the White House.

Crowley, a front line representative when it comes to the concerns and issues of activist Irish Americans, is the nine-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of NY, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx.

There were few doubts Pelosi would defeat Ryan Wednesday. Many are discouraged after losing the White House and making smaller than expected gains in both chambers of Congress.

Democrats take for granted that they attract more Millennial voters than Republicans, but they shouldn’t. But they need to get ready for the next contest in 2018. Walz and Collin Peterson were endangered by out-of-nowhere opponents. And younger members who look at leadership that are all in their 70s who have not gone anywhere in more than a decade and committee chairs that don’t have term limits – so they’re trying to change the – stir the pot a little bit.

Clinton actually won the county – but barely. He said it was time for change in the Democratic Party, an assertion it is nearly impossible to refute. According to a database gathered by The Canadian Press, they saw 80,000 of their voters in these counties stay home, vote for a third party, or switch to Donald Trump. “It’s not necessarily a criticism of anyone in particular. And if you’re business model is not one that’s winning, then obviously you’d be remiss not to change it”.

Ryan, 43, who picked up support from fellow Rust Belt lawmakers and those from the intermountain Western states of Arizona and Colorado, said he had succeeded in opening up the leadership ranks.

But when Ohio Rep. Combine that top-level blockage with limited turnover among ranking members of the committees, and it starts to impede up-and-comers ‘ ability to, well, up and come.

He said there is a divide between urban and rural Democrats. “That cuts off ideas”. But It’s clear that some of Pelosi’s critics feel emboldened by the significant vote – 63 members voting against her remaining in the top slot, 20 more than the last time she beat back a challenge in 2010. Similarly, Ryan’s challenge to the fabled Pelosi was a lot like suiting up for the gridiron, sans facemask. “We know how to win elections”, she says. “We knew this was going to be a really tough race”.

“I assumed I didn’t teach it well”. They’re doing just fine. “I am anxious we just signed Democrats death certificate for next eight years”, he said.

“The message is that we are not going to continue to be a top-down-run caucus”, she told reporters.

“You could have a very skilled legislative tactician that will be navigating in the minority for eternity”.

In fact, Pelosi pivoted some of the conversation to an issue which unites most Democrats.

It was a testament to her vote-counting skills and to her ability to hang onto power even in dark days for Democrats, as they confront a capital that will be fully controlled by the GOP next year. There was grumbling within the caucus that Pelosi’s plans still did not give enough say to freshman members.

“The process that Tim drove was healthy for us, honestly”, he said. “So I would trade anything not to have this opportunity of opposing an administration – where we can, we will engage; where. we need to oppose, we will”. He’s from the Midwest, he’s got a great economic message, he’s a fresh face.

“We got in too late”, said Ryan of his quixotic bid Wednesday.
