Indiana Carrier worker says deal to save jobs just 1st step

But moving forward, Trump said “one of the things we are doing to keep” companies in the United States is lowering the corporate tax from 35% to 15%.

The company attributed its decision to the incoming Trump administration and financial incentives provided by IN, which is something of a reversal, since earlier offers from the state had failed to sway Carrier from decamping to Mexico. And who would pay for the high cost for tax cuts that go to the richest businessmen in America?

“The one who is going to suffer from this is the company … because their products are going to be more expensive”, she added. Carrier will invest $16 million to keep its manufacturing operations in IN, the report said.

In addition to the tax break, Carrier and its parent company, United Technologies, have agreed to invest $16m to keep the plant updated, Mr Trump confirmed.

A source familiar with the negotiations told CNN that the state incentives come to $7 million over 10 years. Those layoffs were to begin in 2017. Reuters reported earlier this week Carrier also still intends to close a factory in Huntington, Indiana, that employs 700 people making controls for heating, cooling and refrigeration and move the jobs to Mexico by 2018.

However, that remains a fraction of the $65 million a year the company would have saved had it moved the plant to Mexico, suggesting the incentives were not the only factor in its decision to stay put.

A Carrier spokesman said earlier Thursday that the company received $7 million in tax incentives from in to keep the factory running.

IN state officials have agreed to give United Technologies Corp, which runs the plant, $7m worth of tax breaks over 10 years.

But the author of “The Art of the Deal” will have a lot more dealmaking to do if he wants to stop the steady erosion of manufacturing jobs from the country due to automation and lower costs overseas. But many Carrier positions are still moving to Mexico, and critics point out that Trump’s intervention amounts to another subsidy for big business. When he learned the employee’s mother was in the audience, he called out to her. Working families in Indianapolis need our help more than ever, and I will continue to fight for them each and every day. “They’re not going to be announcing, like they did at Carrier, that they’re closing up and they’re moving to Mexico”. “He made the case for America”. “President-elect Donald Trump did just what he said he would do – he picked up the phone”.

Carrier’s statement also cited Trump’s promise to “create an improved, more competitive USA business climate”.

Experts say the state incentives are more likely window dressing than a reason for Carrier to have changed its decision.

At the Carrier plant on Thursday, Trump told the crowd that, in the future, he would make leaving the country “very, very difficult” for companies seeking to do so.

“They say it’s not presidential to call up these massive leaders of business”. “I think the major issue here is that Carrier is looking to participate in the policy development on taxes and regulation”. It was an honor to be with the president-elect and vice president-elect today, and I am confident that this is just the beginning.

Some economists and Democrats have downplayed the importance of Trump’s actions.

Trump said Thursday he never made a campaign promise to save Carrier jobs, specifically.

Indiana State AFL-CIO President Brett Voorhies noted that saving jobs is always a good thing. Set to begin Thursday night with a rally in Cincinnati, Ohio, Trump is scheduled to take a victory lap through key swing states as well as historically blue states that he won in the election.

He also reiterated his promise to cut business taxes and regulations in the US.
