Is school out for the Electoral College?

The email asks you to sign a petition to help sway the minds of Electoral College voters who will make their votes official December 19th.

The votes in most states are still coming in, and MI remains too close to call, with Trump now leading by just over 11,600 votes out of almost 4.8 million votes cast-a margin of just 0.2 percent.

In 2000, Democratic candidate, Al Gore, lost to Republican, George W. Bush despite having won 48.4 percent of the popular vote to 47.9 percent for Bush. The majority of these uncounted votes are from presumably blue states like, California, Washington, and NY.

Trump managed to secure well over the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency, but Clinton appears to have soundly won the popular vote by an ever-expanding margin. For the second time in just 16 years, the candidate who got the most votes will not become president due to this outdated, undemocratic system.

The Pew poll was conducted from November 10-14 among 1,254 Americans who voted in the presidential election.

If Mr Trump is declared the victor in MI, he will have accumulated 306 electoral votes to Mrs Clinton’s 232.

Barbara Boxer has introduced legislation to eliminate the Electoral College. But at least six Democratic electors are trying to deny Trump from winning an Electoral College majority in an attempt to block Trump and undermine the Electoral College’s legitimacy. “Campaigning is much different!”

As he has in post-election interviews, Trump said he would have campaigned differently if the popular determined the presidential victor.

The result has also fuelled calls for the Electoral College system to be abolished and replaced with a entirely first-past-the-post system.

Even though electors are selected by party leaders, they are free to vote for whomever they want.

The debate has started again as to whether the US Constitution should be amended in order to change the presidential election process.
