Facebook activated the feature this evening, moments after a truck ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin killing several and injuring 50 others.

Local outlets report the truck plowed through the crowded street market set up near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.

Nine were killed and 50 more injured when the truck careered through the busy square today in a massacre similar to the one in Nice that left 86 dead in July.

Footage from the scene of the incident in Berlin showed the black truck with its front end wedged between the market stalls amid upturned boxes and crates.

Eyewitnesses in the area reported the truck driver ran away after the attack.

Zurich police confirmed some people had been hurt in the vicinity of the centre on Monday, but gave no more details. The attack is eerily reminiscent of the Bastille Day attack in France a year ago.

While investigations into the incident are underway, the Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison has described it as an “absolutely terrible” event and a “reminder of the evil that’s out there in this world”.

The Nice attack was claimed by Islamic State. German police had recently arrested a number of young men suspected of planning attacks on Christmas markets, according to CBS News.

“We can confirm nine dead and many injured”.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was being briefed on the incident by Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere and the Mayor of Berlin, a Government spokesman said.

It is being investigated as an act of terrorism.

“Although there is a host of unanswered questions, indications are it was a deliberate attack, carried out not just with the greatest brutality and disastrous consequences but also with a deliberate symbolism”, German Parliament member Wolfgang Bosbach said.
