Chiefs Drop Heartbreaker to Titans

The Chiefs have not scored a second-half touchdown in three games, which has predictably led to second-guessing about the offensive play calling following the Chiefs’ 19-17 home loss to Tennessee on Sunday. This was a 53-yard kick in sub-zero weather, why not just force Tennessee to make that kick to win instead of giving them time to practice how to do it wrong before getting the chance to line up and do it right?

The only thing that stood out really, was Tennessee won the game on an exceptional special teams play where KC couldn’t do anything more than tip its cap and walk off the field disappointed that it didn’t win on Sunday.

Succop’s second try sailed through the uprights for the win. But he came back to lead the Patriots (12-2) to a record eighth consecutive division title and a first-round bye.

“It’s our job to get the first down and win the game”, center Mitch Morse said. Mike Mularkey will need to spend some extra time this week making sure his team is focused on the game at hand.

It is behind that backdrop that Reid again noted that he appreciates Kelce’s passion and frustration.

Wilson expects to miss Johnson’s leadership, but says the veteran helped equip him to take over in his absence. And once (Ryan) kicked it and I saw it go through, I might have been on the field before even the refs put their arms up.

“I don’t feel that way”, Reid said. “It’s a good locker room”.

Kansas City is 10-4, and it still has the feeling of a team living on borrowed time.

Until the field goal, the Chiefs led the entire game, scoring two first-quarter touchdowns from wide receiver Tyreek Hill on a 68-yard run and a 10-yard run by quarterback Alex Smith.

The task of doing that, Reid said, falls on himself. The Titans offensive line kept them in check for most of the game.

But they’re definitely going to have to wrap their minds around the fact the Titans are OK too.

“You sit here and point fingers and do all that stuff that bad teams do, or you fix the problems”, Reid said.

Baltimore (8-6) led 27-17 with just over six minutes left when Joe Flacco threw an interception inside the Philadelphia 10 to give the Eagles (5-9) another chance. “I was kind of pacing back and forth on the sideline, ” Mariota said, “and I ended up toward the back half of the sideline next to Tajae (Sharpe) and Harry (Douglas)”. I felt like I hit the first one good, and when it came up short, there was a second in my mind where I didn’t think I could reach it from there. “We had an opportunity to put the game away and didn’t get it done”.

A win against the Chiefs on Sunday before playing the Jaguars next week could potentially set up a winner-take-all scenario at home against the Texans in Week 17.

Playing before what looked like a home crowd at 70,000-seat Qualcomm Stadium, the visiting Raiders (11-3) earned a playoff nod on the same field where they made their last postseason appearance, an embarrassing 48-21 loss to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl on January 26, 2003. De’Anthony Thomas and Mariota met and had a conversation following the game. We were pretty stagnant in the second half, so it’s easy to say when things are not going well. “We’re all in it together on that thing”.

Now, Oakland is back in front in the AFC West, Tennessee is temporarily in first place in the AFC South. Most teams covet their overall athleticism and speed.

“You have three turnovers, you only get seven points off of it”, he said.
