Trump picks China critic for trade post
Trump had made trade as a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, trying to appeal to angry and frustrated blue-collar white voters who have seen manufacturing jobs lose in an increasing global economy. Items at the store range from teapots and ceramic goods to silk purses and Chinese musical instruments. He has promised to expand U.S. manufacturing by reducing federal regulation and by preventing what he has described as unfair competition from Chinese manufacturers.

The professor from the University of California-Irvine has sharply criticized China’s economic and military policies in videos and books, including “Death By China”. Navarro was one of the leading economists on the Trump campaign, co-authoring a report on growth plans in September with Trump’s pick for Commerce Department chief, Wilbur Ross. The U.S. trade deficit with China hit a record $367.4 billion in 2015 – more than quadruple the scale back in 2000, the year before China joined the WTO.
Wu Xinbo, head of American studies at Shanghai’s Fudan University, said Trump’s key concern would be the trade deficit, and he would demand China lower tariff barriers and give USA companies more market access. He also participated in the production of a 2012 Netflix 100-minute documentary adapted from his work Death by China, blaming Beijing for the loss of 57,000 American factories and 25 million jobs.
“Trump has entrusted Navarro with an important post”.
Chinese officials and academics have long anxious that the United States will seek to crudely quash their country’s rise, and in Navarro they have found the flawless foil.
China’s state media has said that US President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of Peter Navarro as his trade adviser is a “real cause for concern”, and warned of a “showdown with the US”. “He will fulfill an essential role in my administration as a trade adviser”, Trump said.
There is clearly a degree of worry in China over what a Trump presidency can bring and the scary possibility of a trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
“We do indeed recognize that talking tough is a lot easier than thinking tough and making tough decisions, which is what presidents actually have to do”, he said adding, “The chamber has long supported maintaining stability in the region, and we expect the new USA administration to respect the status quo”. “I don’t think so!” “His help on the strangling regulations that our country is faced with will be invaluable”.

Mr Icahn, 80, is known as an aggressive and activist investor.
“The corrupt nature of this arrangement can not be understated”, Eric Walker, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement about Icahn’s appointment. “Voters who wanted Trump to drain the swamp just got another face full of mud”, he added. Additionally, Navarro is a published author with 13 book titles to his name, many of which focus around the subject of economics as well. Trump has consistently railed on China for stealing American manufacturing jobs.

“His appointment is another sign of the confrontational approach the incoming Trump administration seems intent on taking in relations with China”, the China Daily, an English-language mouthpiece, wrote in an editorial. Not surprisingly, few economists agree with Navarro.
