George Michael, the British pop singer who died December 25 at the age of 53, has described his younger self, the man who rose to worldwide stardom as the bronzed, hunky frontman of the duo Wham!, as a kind of fictional alter-ego-not unlike the Ziggy Stardust avatar that David Bowie created, or the mysterious, androgynous persona that Prince embodied.

But the legacy of the pop star, who sold well over 100 million albums in the span of his career, extends far beyond his music.

Michael went on to enjoy a massively successful solo career and his album Faith was a huge success in 1988.

The genuine heart aching feeling of wishing you hadn’t met someone and you could forget them but actually knowing you never can.
