PATCO offers free rides for New Year revelers

Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Portland (OR), San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., are among the many USA metropolitan areas offering totally free public transportation on New Year’s Eve.

May Firm, a personal injury law practice, is offering a free, one-way ride from December 31 to January 1 in multiple California counties. The rides home are available from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m. January 1.

The company is adding additional vehicles this year for the Safe Ride program, according to Orland Park, which launched the program almost 20 years ago.

“You know it’s something that you always don’t want to pay the extra, but if they’re taking you home, and it’s a really busy night for all of them, I totally didn’t mind it”, Marylander Emilie Carter said. With taxis you won’t have to deal with surge pricing, but depending on where you need to go it can cost anywhere from $15 to more than $50 to get from downtown to other cities in the metro area.

New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year, but it can also be one of the most unsafe. We expect fares to be the highest on New Year’s between midnight and 3am.

“If teens are getting together on New Years Eve, we want to promote safe gatherings”, said SRO officer Deputy Jarrod Adams.
