At the London Stadium, goals from Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic led Manchester United to a 2-0 win over 10-man West Ham United.

The return to form and fitness of Jay Rodriguez has further limited Long’s chances and he has been used sparingly by manager Claude Puel, who also added to his attacking options with record £16m signing Sofiane Boufal.

Mourinho was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail, “I know we’ve a lot of competitions to play but where is the striker to come here with that quality to play for United?”

The Portuguese told the BBC: “These fixtures are very hard for everyone but I managed to calm the team and tell some key players in the second half to do exactly what I want”. It is awesome for the fans around the world. I came to United, my first six months here has been more than unbelievable.

However, the decision seemed harsh, with both players going in strongly and Feghouli hardly looking to hurt his opponent.

“I came to the Premier League and everyone thought it would not be possible but, like always, I make them eat their balls”, Ibrahimovic stated, before he turned is attention to those who questioned his abilities as he moved to United last summer.

“When you are fresh you play simple, when you are not fresh you play complicated”.

The Hammers battled well throughout the first half and could be said to be unlucky to go into the break all square.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last four on the road (W3 D1); they haven’t gone five unbeaten in the Premier League since February 2015 (seven games).

Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he is getting a kick out proving his critics wrong at Manchester United this season. And this time, a couple of key decisions went in favour of Mourinho’s men.

Mata said Mourinho’s message to him was similarly direct: “Try and score. try to create something”. “Time by time, he will take over everything”, he said of the 19-year-old in September, and one adept piece of hold-up play and through-ball provided a half-chance to underscore the point. Thank you, thank you very much. “I can not also comment on [Cheikou] Kouyate’s tackle on [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan, I can not comment”.
