Black Hollywood takes home major gold at 2017 Golden Globes

After an awkwardly too-long joke about chopping his Golden Globe into three to share with Stone and director Damien Chazelle (both went on to win their own, she for best actress in a comedy or musical, he for best screenplay and best director), Gosling got serious.

Moonlight is now mostly playing in bigger cities across the country, but I’d expect the film’s Golden Globe win and its upcoming Oscar campaign to warrant a wider release from distributor A24.

It was also big night for beloved actresses, with Viola Davis winning Best Supporting Actress for Fences and later presenting the HFPA’s Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement to the inimitable Meryl Streep.

There was a surprise in the Best Actress (Drama) category with Elle star Isabelle Huppert taking home the gong instead of Natalie Portman, who had been the favourite to win for her performance in Jackie.

Streep closed by reminding the crowd of the “privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy” and tearfully quoting the late Carrie Fisher: “As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once, “Take your broken heart, make it into art”. “I couldn’t be here without Atlanta and I really want to thank The Migos, not for being in the show but for making “Bad and Boujee” – that’s the best song ever, so yeah”.

The Golden Globes, which are seen as a good precursor for what to expect at the Academy Awards, were handed out in Los Angeles this afternoon. We love his hilarious riff comparing his not being able to see his jokes to Mimi not bring able to hear her backing track during her disastrous NYE performance. “Do not expect cinema to set up walls and borders”, the French actress told the audience. Is this the sign of times a-changing and becoming more welcoming of new content? “It was like she was on the other side of the world, and how was I going to reach her?” “When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose”.

She talked about the moment when Trump imitated a disabled reporter, and echoed the importance of journalists and needing “the principled press to hold power to account”.

Echoing victor Hugh Laurie (The Night Manager), she noted that the group that chooses the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, represents in its title the most “vilified” segments of our society right now: “Hollywood”, “foreign”, “press”.

By now, you’re probably clued up about what went down at last night’s Golden Globes. The industry has also been criticized for unequal pay between the sexes.
