The Inter-Mountain photos by Beth Henry-Vance Community members march Sunday through downtown Elkins to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a frequent Trump critic, is scheduled to speak, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King preached, along with King’s youngest child, Bernice King, and several other speakers.
“Kind of like the pentacle of our weekend before we head back to Dallas”, said Juliet Pettijohn.
“I’d like somebody to mention on that day Martin Luther King Jr. tried to give his life serving others”, he said. Dr. King’s efforts led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed segregation, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which made discriminatory voting practices illegal. Activist Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929, to Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King.
“I think when you make art with people there’s a sense of shared love, which is the essence of Dr. King”, said another.
The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art will host a civil rights-themed exhibition, while Great North Museum: Hancock will tell the story of King’s visit. “The celebration is to keep his memory alive”.
King was killed while standing on a balcony at the old Lorraine Motel on April 4, 1968.
In a since-deleted tweet that was captured by a local TV station on Friday, the city of Biloxi wrote that some municipal offices would be closed on Monday “in observance of Great Americans Day”. He would have been 87.
Hundreds of thousands of people were expected to march Monday in parades and demonstrations in hundreds of US cities and towns, emulating King’s marches for justice in the 1950s and ’60s.
The march began at Garfield High School around 11 a.m.

Marchers will go to the Franklin County Courthouse for prayer and a song on the courthouse steps.
