Haley Vows to Defend Israel at UN, Takes Hard Line on Russian Federation
Democrats spent less of the four-hour hearing probing Haley, and more time asking questions that might drive a wedge between Trump and his nominee – specifically in regards to the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, as well as on Russian Federation. “Hopefully we can get him to see it the way we see it”, she said.

Power noted to the Blade earlier this month during a telephone interview from NY that the USA fought Russia’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn then-U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s directive to provide spousal benefits to gay U.N. personnel who are legally married.
“When do you see the United Nations solving problems?”
“She really put it at the forefront of her work”, said Booker.
But Haley, the governor of SC, split with Trump – and other prominent Republican leaders – during her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by repeatedly saying that she does not back a “slash and burn” approach to defunding the United Nations.
That has triggered criticism that Trump is soft on Moscow’s aggressive foreign policy.
“There is such tremendous potential, but it is not living up”, said Mr Trump.
In a written statement after her nomination, Gov. Haley said: “I always expected to finish the remaining two years of my second term as governor”.
Haley also said the US should not send the message that it accepts Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and emphasized that unless Moscow takes positive steps, the USA should not lift sanctions on the country.
“I love to fix things”, Haley told the committee.
“During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices”, Haley had said in January 2016, delivering the GOP response to President Barack Obama’s last State of the Union address.
She said it was her “job to uphold” the state’s constitution and defend its same-sex marriage ban.
Haley’s confirmation hearing is before the same Senate committee.
“Any comments that the president-elect has made, those are his comments”, she noted.
The tensest exchange during the hearing focused on the Iran deal, when Haley claimed the agreement does not subject Iran to “any sort of prohibitions on building nuclear weapons.” Sen. “Once you govern it becomes very different”. “I think that that was the moment where we should’ve told the world how we stand with Israel”.
And she used questions about the 2010 Haiti cholera epidemic, which the United Nations took responsibility for a year ago, to explain why the US should not shoulder so much of the peacekeeping financial burden. Trump hasn’t clearly stated how he feels about the annexation.
Her commitment to that pledge will be tested in navigating theareas where the president elect’s public statements on foreign relations breaks from USA policy norms.
But Sen. Ben Cardin, D-MD, the top Democrat on the committee, was enthusiastic about Haley’s skill set and personality. “During her tenure, she has done so successfully amid times of both great celebration and tragedy”. Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham have put forward legislation to cut off all United Nations funding until the Israeli vote, which passed 14-0, is reversed.
