Hours before Donald Trump was scheduled to be sworn in as President of the United States, about 150 striking janitors and their supporters picketed in front of a Home Depot store in northeast Minneapolis. “Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth”.

Demonstrators were kept away from the official events, but there were several skirmishes between protesters and police.

Yet not only did Mr Trump deliver a stumping speech which was indistinguishable from those made during his electoral campaign, but he also acted as someone who was still fighting to win power, rather than as a president in control of all levers, including both Houses of Congress. Trump and his family left the Trump International Hotel spent some downtime at the Blair House on Pennsylvania Avenue before heading to Arlington National Cemetery, where he laid a wreath with Vice President-elect Mike Pence.

At fourteen hundred words, Trump’s speech was the shortest by hundreds of words since Jimmy Carter’s – and certainly the most provocative.

Chong and Thomson, donning Trump merchandise jewelry and red Make America Great Again hats, stood side-by-side with a group wearing shirts that read “No Trump, No KKK, No Racist U.S.A.” as the president delivered what’s being considered his largest call for unity since winning the 2016 presidential election on November 8. But the speech also included some familiar lines of attack.

“For many decades we’ve … subsidised the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military”, he said.

Over 200 protesters were arrested as brick-throwing vandals torched a vehicle and damaged half- dozen stores after a series of protests marring Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony gave way to violent street clashes here in the US. The political Establishment were put on notice in his Inaugural Speech, which was little more than a polished version of what he had been saying on the stump for the last nine months. But planners are only expecting about 800,000 people.

While the crowd booed Clinton, it was far gentler on the outgoing president: Obama received polite applause as he arrived at the Capitol, and his wife Michelle received an enthusiastic ovation surpassed only by the cheers for Trump himself. To some extent, these numbers are purely symbolic.

The order notes that Trump plans to seek the “prompt repeal” of the law. The new president, like the one who preceded him, is rightly calling us now to find common ground and focus on rebuilding the country from here.

Later today, Mr and Mrs Trump will attend a national prayer service at Washington Cathedral. Other protests saw tuba players and modern dancing. The idea for the march was hatched by a small group of women, but has since attracted a broad range of opponents.

The president previously said America needed to “legalize drugs to win” the war on drugs and more recently referred to Colorado’s legal pot industry a “real problem” according to Business Insider.
