Bharatiya Janata Party leader S Prakash hailed the state government and the Centre’s efforts to pave way for jallikattu.

The Supreme Court on May 2014, while hearing a petition against Jallikattu by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) banned Jallikattu, saying bulls can not be used as performing animals including bullock-cart races.

Divulging the details of the meet, the Prime Minister’s Office said, “The ban imposed on Jallikattu by the Supreme Court came up for discussion with CM Panneerselvam”.

Jallikattu will now take place after a gap of three years on Sunday and Monday across Tamil Nadu.

The Madras High Court dismissed a PIL seeking enactment of a special law with conditions by the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government for holding jallikattu, saying it can not issue such a direction.

The protesters – surrounded by large numbers of police – have threatened to disrupt India’s Republic Day celebrations on Thursday if their demands are not met, NDTV reported. Villagers have staged a sit-in protest demanding a permanent solution for the issue of banning the bull-taming sport Jallikattu.

“Despite its safeguards, an Ordinance that does not enjoy the confidence of people will not yield any practical results”.

After the Supreme Court’s ban on Jallikattu, an ordinance promulgated by the state government had paved the way for holding the sport in several parts of the state.

The Washington protest organizers have requested participants to wear black clothes during the 11 am-1 pm to show solidarity with protesters in India. Some students continued their protest for the sixth day in front of the Thanjavur head post office.
