Severe Storms End, More on the Way Sunday

Cook County Coroner Tim Purvis said an apparent tornado “leveled” numerous mobile homes before dawn Sunday in the park near Adel.
The system prompted United States weather forecasters to issue a rare, “high risk” warning of severe storms threatening parts of southern Georgia, north and central Florida and Alabama on Sunday (Monday NZ time), the first such warning since 2014. “The threat of hail looks more marginal, but some severe hail could accompany the storms.” forecasters said in their discussion message. Authorities reported four deaths Saturday in MS as the storm system ramped up. The responsible twister was rated a 3 on the 0-5 Enhanced Fujita scale, indicating peak wind speeds of 111 to 135 miles per hour.
There have been a reported 47 tornadoes across the South, including MS and Alabama, in four waves of severe weather systems since Thursday. While the threat will be limited, we will still need to monitor for possible severe weather.
Southern Georgia, north and central Florida, and Alabama were placed under a “high risk” warning for the first time since 2014.
A tornado watch is in effect until 2 p.m. CST for far southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle.
January tornados are fairly rare, as the usual tornado season takes place during the spring, CBS News reported.
“The total debris clean-up will be weeks at this point”, said Lee Smithson, of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
