China looking forward to a friendly relationship with Trump

One from Shanghai said: “We should be prepared to fight!” It’s topped with a golden crest and is surrounded by a crowd. Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli also attended the seminar.

Huang said some Chinese dissidents are optimistic about the Trump administration, hoping that it will take a tougher line with Beijing on human rights issues than the outgoing president Barack Obama did. And neither does the leadership in Beijing.

In addition to economic considerations, China has been flexing its military muscle of late in the South China Sea – a conflict we have advised America to resist engaging.

Trump named Liveris in December to lead a private-sector group on manufacturing that will advise the USA secretary of commerce. Although Trump was sworn in on Friday, he has said he considers Monday his first formal day in office.

As the political winds shift in Washington, climate change now deserves an independent strategy that takes into account but is not dependent on the US-China relationship.

There’s a lot at stake.

Twelve nations are parties to the deal include Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, and Mexico.

“Everything is under negotiation including one-China”, Trump had said on January 15, questioning the decades old policy followed by Washington.

Trade tensions or conflict could also undermine the US ability to engage in linkage diplomacy. “For the last 30 years, we have had a series of trade deals – including the North American Free Trade Agreement, permanent normal trade relations with China and others – which have cost us millions of decent-paying jobs and caused a “race to the bottom” which has lowered wages for American workers”.

Trump has thrown all that into doubt. Just a few days back he remarked that the One China policy, which says Taiwan is part of China, was negotiable. “On Trump’s inauguration speech emphasising about making United States first, he talked mainly about the domestic policies of the US”.

Chinese state newspapers have voiced outrage.

Before taking office, Trump hosted a number of U.S. CEOs in meetings in NY, including business leaders from defense, technology and other sectors.

This month, China sent its only aircraft carrier into the strait between the mainland and Taiwan and carried out war exercises overhead.

President Donald Trump has so deeply infected the global discussion that a recent headline on the front page of a Philippine daily that shouted WORLD ON EDGE AS TRUMP ERA NEARS could have been published nearly anywhere.

And it signed off with a warning tone, saying that slapping punitive tariffs on his country’s largest trading partner and labelling China a “currency manipulator” would lead only to retaliation.

Hua made no mention of the long-running dispute over Taiwan, the self-governing island that China claims as its own territory.

Yu noted that Trump had, in one of his notoriously intemperate Tweets, called the United States’ one-China policy into question.

Economists assume that the government’s structural reforms, including efforts to cool China’s overheated housing market, coupled with a potentially testy relationship with the new United States administration will weigh on China’s growth this year.

He was accompanied by politicians from both the ruling party and the opposition Nationalists, and has met US lawmakers including Republican Rep. Ed Royce, chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee, and Republican Sen.

Would China really break off diplomatic relations?

Since the annual USA trade deficit with China has averaged more than $300 billion since 2010, Beijing has a lot more to lose if the relationship falters, which gives Washington some leverage.

Of course, it’s also possible that Trump is simply raising this and other sensitive issues as negotiating tactics to further US trade and investment goals.

The only goal of Taiwan’s national defense reform is to build a strong and competent force that is combat ready, Tsai said.

Xi and other Chinese leaders are also looking to fill the U.S. leadership vacuum, taking advantage of Trump’s protectionism to boost ties with traditional USA allies like the Philippines and Malaysia. “We will do things better and better until we become the best, and we will not do anything extravagant or superficial”, she said. It also restricts access to its domestic markets. “Therefore, he surely knows that investment from Chinese businesses benefits the USA economy and could help create more jobs for the country”.
