Serena Williams Wins Australian Open
The 35-year-old American made her Grand Slam debut in Melbourne way back in 1998 and won the first of her major titles at the US Open a year later.

The win moves Serena to the top spot in the number of major tennis titles during the Open era, which began in 1968. Congratulation Serena on winning No. 23 and I’ve been there alongside you, sometimes against you.
“Obviously I was really proud of Venus”, Serena said. By winning, she’d also regain the No. 1 ranking she lost after her U.S. Open semifinal exit. “They also relate to the person also who didn’t win because we all have those moments in our life”, Williams said.
You could see it too, with Serena losing control early in the match when a point went against her. Does she miss the competition against them? “Absolutely”. Your wins have always been my wins.
“I felt ready. I mean, I haven’t played in a final for a number of years, but I don’t think it’s something you forget”, she said. The sisters will compete in the final of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Saturday. Then, okay, won’t be an easy match.I know that it won’t be easy. In 2011, she was diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome and it took her time to be able to combat the autoimmune disease.
Serena Williams kept alive her bid for a 23rd major title with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Johanna Konta, and Lucic-Baroni turned back fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
But getting past her sister won’t be automatic. “To play an unbelievable player, future Hall of Famer, Venus, to be on the court with her but to do it at this stage of a grand slam is kind of insane”.
Both Williams sisters traded games in the first set. In that second set Serena’s first serve – which she said hadn’t helped her out much of the tournament – became more of a factor. She converted 5 of 9 break points against the big-serving Vandeweghe while Vandeweghe could convert just one of 13.
The quarter-final will hardly be remembered as a classic, with both Venus and the 24th-ranked Russian surrendering serve with alarming regularity despite ideal conditions for tennis at Rod Laver Arena.
The match didn’t live up to its classic billing, with nerves and tension causing uncharacteristic mistakes and unforced errors and four consecutive service breaks before Venus finally held for a 3-2 lead in the first set.

She embraced the occasion instead. For Serena, that’s her older sibling. One wondered if parents Oracene Price and Richard Williams – so instrumental in their daughters’ careers – watched back home in the US.
