Who is affected by Trump’s immigration order?
Iranian-American academic Karim Sadjadpour juxtaposes the image of elderly Iranian green card holders detained for hours in Washington, against an image of Ivanka Trump with her husband dressing up for a night out on 28 January, the day after Trump’s executive order on immigration. The data also show that Iraqi refugees were admitted every month during the 2011 calendar year.

Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway reaffirmed the president’s decision in a Twitter post on Saturday. It also indefinitely bans Syrians.
Earlier in the day, 12 people from countries on the suspension list were taken into detention, although one of them, an Iraqi who had worked as a translator for the USA military, was later released and allowed to enter the U.S. Trump also announced he will reveal his pick for the Supreme Court at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Mitch McConnell said the ban was “completely and totally inconsistent with American values”. And they didn’t. Now, with protests starting at many worldwide airports, several Democrats have issued statements against the ban (and a few have joined the protests). Trump enters his second week in office amid a global backlash to his policies. Trump’s order slashes that figure to 50,000. I know there is an impulse to treat everything the President says or does with hostility because of how openly antagonistic he has been to the media, but it is important for a complete and truthful picture to be presented to the American people at all times. Meanwhile, Trump’s order does not address homegrown extremists already in America, a primary concern of federal law enforcement officials.
The outcry against the travel ban prompted house Democrats on Monday to sign legislation attempting to overturn Trump’s order, while members of the entertainment industry used their fame to urge people to donate to the American Civil Liberties Union. On the day of Trump’s inauguration, I flew with my family to Washington to take part in the women’s march. US civil rights and faith groups, activists and Democratic politicians vowed to fight the order.
Mrs May is under increasing pressure to reveal whether she knew about the Muslim ban before she proffered the invitation – the highest level of hospitality and expression of friendship that can be bestowed on a foreign leader – at their summit last week. Hence, you have the seven countries now hit with the travel ban.
“Before 2016, when Obama dramatically ramped up refugee admissions, Trump’s 50,000 stands roughly in between a typical year of refugee admissions in George W. Bush’s two terms and a typical year in Obama’s two terms”, French pointed out stressing that it was ex-president Barack Obama who expanded the number of refugees admitted by the United States during his second term.
Due process can vary from case to case – but foreign nationals, including refugees, have rights and protection under US law.
Now is also not a good time to attempt to enter the U.S. There appeared to be widespread confusion among authorities tasked with carrying out the order and how it would be applied to certain groups, such as US legal permanent residents.
Kalash says he has many Syrian friends who are green card holders and will now find it hard to return to their homes in America after visiting family overseas. It remains unclear what kind of additional screening they will now face. “How we vet people I think needs improvement”.
I want to speak directly to the young people who may be listening.
Trump signed an executive order Friday banning entry of people traveling to the US from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen for at least 90 days.
Immigrants from seven mainly Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – will not be allowed into the U.S. for 90 days, with some exemptions for diplomats.
Ambiguity reigned Sunday as to the finer details of Donald Trump’s temporary ban on incoming refugees and travelers from seven Muslim countries, with questions remaining about how exactly the measures affect various populations.

“There is imminent danger, absent stay of removal, there will be substantial and irreparable injury to refugees, visa-holders and other individuals subject to the January 27, 2017 executive order”, Donnelly wrote in her order, which lists Trump and Gen. John Kelly, his Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, among its respondents.
