States cite ‘chaos’ in Trump’s refugee order
While their decision won’t determine the constitutionality of Trump’s immigration order, it will determine whether U.S. District Court Judge James Robart’s restraining order will remain.

Tesla is one company absent from the recent filing. The few exceptions include yogurt producer Chobani, snack maker Kind and fashion brand Levi Strauss. The tech companies, some of whose leaders have come out against the order in statements over the past week, added that “immigrants or their children founded more than 200 of the companies on the Fortune 500 list”.
Washington state Solicitor General Noah Purcell said, “It’s really the federal government that’s asking the court to upset the status quo”. After the hearing concluded, Federal Judge Michelle T. Friedland said the panel was going to aim for a ruling as soon as possible, given the “time-sensitive” nature of the order.
Three federal judges will hear arguments at 6 p.m. EST today that could decide the immediate fate of President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration related to refugees and immigrants.
A final decision is expected this week. Attorney General Maura Healey filed a brief supporting Washington’s claims, saying MA would be affected the same way.
Although the Ninth Circuit is known for leaning liberal, Kari Hong, an assistant professor at Boston College Law School, told CNN that Tuesday’s hearing was standard fare. Some experts predict the case will ultimately reach the U.S. Supreme Court because the losing side likely will request the justices consider the case. Trump’s order banned entry and restricted travel by immigrants and refugees from seven Middle East countries in the name of national security, including those with valid USA visas and permanent residence status, or green cards. Syrian refugees are blocked indefinitely.
Tech companies have been at the vanguard of businesses opposing the ban.
In a morning tweet, he wrote: “If the USA does not win this case as it so obviously should, we can never have the security and safety to which we are entitled”.
When asked by the judges what evidence was used to connect the seven countries with attacks in the US, Flentje said the “proceedings have been moving very fast” – without giving specific examples. “But it has done so while maintaining our fundamental commitment to welcoming immigrants – through increased background checks and other controls on people seeking to enter our country”.
Arguments have begun in a USA appeals court in a lawsuit over President Donald Trump’s travel ban.
Flentje argued the order did not do that.
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick on Thursday dropped out of President Trump’s business advisory council, citing the ban.
The state of Washington in its brief believes that the executive order’s effect is unorderly. He cited instances of residents stranded overseas, families separated, and economic loss. The retail giant filed a motion against the ban at the end of January.

Trump frequently promised during his 2016 election campaign to curb undocumented immigration, especially from Mexico, and to crack down on “Islamic terrorism”.
