Eddie Jones hails “gritty” England performance to overcome Wales

It was a second worldwide try for the Wasps wing and earned him praise from coach Eddie Jones as England made it 16 successive Test victories – all but one of which have come under the Australian.

Elliot Daly’s late try saw England over the line in a pulsating match during which the two sides were separated by no more than five points at any stage.

Having gone the whole of 2016 unbeaten, including a Grand Slam Six Nations title run, Jones has his England squad in imperious form, despite being hampered by injury. We played with pace, we played with accuracy, as did England.

“Jack Clifford also deserves his starting role”.

Eddie Jones may resort to cuddling to get his England players firing, but Jonathan Joseph says the hostility of the Welsh crowd in Cardiff is enough motivation for him. My job is to keep doing that.

“This group are still learning and developing on and off the field and the fact we set them such high standards is because of the potential they have”.

“However, we felt that going 13 points down was the result of the boys not being as focused as they could have been and it’s important to mention we dug ourselves out of a hole in the first half”.

“I always thought we could still win the game”, said the Australian. He, after all, led the Red Rose to World Cup glory over Australia in 2003.

“He might get back for Ireland”. Last week we were a little bit too loose at times.

“But what I like about this team, and I really mean it, is the way we find a way to be effective”.

“It is hard for us to blow away teams at the moment because we are lacking a bit of firepower”.

Howley’s men were not able to hold on for the victory but Biggar can be proud of his display – he gave a masterclass in defence and with ball in hand.

“We started very well, but we let the intensity slip in the second 20 minutes of the first-half. He’d be pretty useful off the bench at 150kg”, said Jones.

“Again the finishers came on and added loads to that game and showed great composure”.

“We were there for 67-68 minutes, and the last 10 minutes, maybe we lost our composure”, said scrum-half Webb after the 21-16 defeat.

Warburton last week compared England to New Zealand and the outcome on Saturday was like so many of Wales’s matches against the southern hemisphere’s big three in the last nine years: matching them physically and close to them on the scoreboard for 75 minutes but falling short because of an inability to finish opportunities and a tendency to concede late on.
