Recapping The Bachelor, Episode 8: Hometown Heroes

Nick Viall has clearly gotten over his misgivings about ABC’s The Bachelor because he’s back locking lips with Vanessa this week. How can you tell? And at the Final Rose Ceremony, Viall rejected Gates and gave his final rose to Grimaldi, his winning bachelorette.

Raven returned home to Hoxie, Arkansas, to show Nick how to ride ATVs, get ridiculously muddy, and climb a grain bin.

Since Vanessa’s parents are divorced, Nick met her mom’s side of the family first.

Bachelor spoiler Reality Steve has the low down and says she’s just there to give Viall advice about his journey to find love. Full of adrenaline after their run-in with the law, Raven and Nick wrestled in a marsh. However, Raven didn’t end up telling Nick that she was falling in love with him, as she was too scared to lay it all out there with 3 other women still in the running.

Monday’s episode saw Viall going on his hometown dates with the final four contestants and the time he spent with the Olympios family was indeed an interesting watch.

First impression rose victor and next Bachelorette grabs Nick and takes him to church-literally.

If you’re a bullfrog, I’m a bullfrog.

For family reasons, Vanessa chose to have Nick meet her mom’s side first, then her dad’s. To his credit, Nick wasn’t uncomfortable talking about it, but he had a perhaps somewhat naive “I like her for the woman that she is, she just happens to be black” take on the situation. Nick assured Rachel’s family that he is happy to face society’s still-in-development acceptance of interracial couples “head on”, which subsequently earned him their approval. As they overlook the city skyline from across the river in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Nick takes a stroll through his past heartbreak.

Nick’s hometown date with Corinne is at the mall. “My chemistry with Rachel is the most explosive I have with anyone”.

Unconventionally, Nick had a private chat with Corrine’s nanny. After they escape church without getting struck down by God himself, Rachel says that her father, the federal judge, is not going to be appearing on a reality show.

Corinne tells her dad that she really loves Nick and how his best trait is the fact that he loves her. Rachel’s mother is confident enough in her conversation with Nick to tell her daughter that she trusts her judgment and can see the potential in their relationship.

Last but not least, Nick jetted to Canada for some QT with Vanessa. But all those scenes actually worked nicely in tandem with Vanessa’s, making the episode on a whole more real than it normally is, and prompting reflection on what this show could be if these moments were encouraged because they’re thought-provoking, and not merely as rote entertainment.

Offering more proof that the “Bachelor” producers are powerful sorcerers, the skies poured rain as Vanessa found out about the multiple blessing-askings and began to doubt their relationship. Corinne is waiting in Miami where her father has some tough questions.

When they visit her family, Raven’s mom reveals that her dad is cancer-free. Have they seriously not figured out how this show works by now? I’m very happy for you, Mr. Gates, even though it’s none of my business.

Vanessa’s dad is the only father to ask Nick if he’s asked the other fathers for their blessing on a proposal and Nick admits that he has. Where did she stand among the four remaining women? And as such, Nick will be meeting them separately. The final one-on-one date goes to a lovely small-town bachelorette.

Andi Dorfman is back!

Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Bachelor” season 21. Nick, the software salesman from Wisconsin, was a runner-up on Andi Dorman’s season, and lost out to Josh Murray. Turns out Raven is the cop’s kid sister and he is more than a little protective and definitely willing to make this the Most Dramatic Hometown Visit Ever™. We see some leather-clad legs walking down a hallway and then Nick gets a knock on his door.
