President Trump spent this past weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, holding a campaign-style rally in Melbourne on Saturday. Soon after Trump became president, membership fees to Mar-a-Lago doubled to $200,000 a year.
And in Atlanta, protesters included college students like Alyssa McNerney, who said she came out to highlight Republican party’s hypocrisy. “If someone does that, he will likely favor them (because they have brought in business.) It’s nearly like bribery”. “We’ve sold out to corporate interests, and Donald Trump’s policies are downright offensive”.
The Not My President Rallies have demonstrators gathering across the country to support people of color, immigrants, Muslims, workers, LGBTQ people, and the poor. “Everyone is just trying to do what they can do”, he said.
A larger anti-Trump faction stood on a street corner as part of the protest while a group supporting the president lined up on a different corner at the same intersection. “Not My President’s Day” rallies have been going on all day in cities across the country.
Over two dozen protesters gathered in downtown Marquette on Monday, expressing their disagreement towards the actions that Donald Trump has made since becoming President of the United States.
“I’m just trying to come out here because I didn’t see a lot of people my age out here, and I wanted to make sure that people knew that it was represented by people of all ages”, Crooks said, noting that most of the people in her US government class supported Trump.
Rebecca Wolfram of Chicago, who’s in her 60s, said concerns about climate change and immigrant rights under Trump prompted her to start attending rallies. Now his supporters say it’s time to show the nation that Trump and his agenda have loads of support.
“NO! We refuse to accept a fascist America”, one sign declared. “We need to keep doing this”, she said.
But at one point, the crowds at the rally had swelled so much that organizers moved to the South lawn side of City Hall to accommodate everyone.
