Lucas Perez ‘deserves more football,’ admits Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger

Following Arsenal’s humiliating 5-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the second round Champions League match last Wednesday, the banners proclaiming “In Arsene We Trust” should be looking rather precarious.

Stan Kroenke, who owns the largest stake at Arsenal, is determined to bring Thierry Henry back to the club as manager.

“A player when I managed for the first time at 33 or 34 said that after our first defeat I threw up”. Initially, the Gunners had planned to move for Leicester attacker Jamie Vardy, but the Englishman rejected all approaches made by the North London club to pledge his loyalty to the title winners. I’d really like to see it because what he’s trying to do at Arsenal is “Baby Barcelona” and it’s never quite worked to that level.

Arsenal have drawn up a shortlist of possible replacements in case Wenger does depart in the summer, with Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim becoming one of the leading candidates to take over from the Frenchman.

Arsenal forward Lucas Perez has admitted that he would like to play more regularly but is determined to keep fighting for his place to make the most of his opportunities.

“I will decide (my) future in March or April, but I don’t (exactly) know when”, Wenger told a news conference yesterday, before his team’s fifth-round FA Cup clash away to non-league Sutton United tomorrow. “Chelsea are a reflection of Conte – are Arsenal now a reflection of Wenger?”

Kroenke, club chairman Sir Chips Keswick and CEO Ivan Gazidis will be the ones who will make the decision on the club’s next manager if Wenger departs. “If you can get the ball back and get up the pitch quick you’re straight into their back four, and that’s the problem they’ve got”.
