Earnings Scorecard: Wal-Mart Q4 2016

Instinet restated a neutral rating and issued a $81.00 target price on shares of Wal-Mart Stores in a research note on Tuesday, December 20th. The number of customers rose for the ninth straight quarter.

For the full year, Wal-Mart reported diluted EPS of $4.38 and revenues of $485.87 billion.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) helps people around the world save money and live better – anytime and anywhere – in retail stores, online, and through their mobile devices. Comparable store sales advanced 1.8 percent fuelled by an increase of 1.4 percent traffic while its Neighborhood Market comps grew about 5.3 percent.

Shares of Macy’s jumped by as much as 3.13% to $33.31 in premarket trades this morning.

The results underscored the benefits and drawbacks of the retail giant’s ramped-up investment in employee wages, store beautification and e-commerce in a bid to fend off competition from Amazon and others. But Wal-Mart’s results show that its aggressive efforts are helping.

Company shares have received an average consensus rating of Hold for the current week Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Wal-Mart Stores also updated its Q1 guidance to $0.90-1.00 EPS.

To capitalize on e-commerce growth, Wal-Mart must continue to improve its website in order to attract more online shoppers, an investment approach more akin to Amazon, which famously pours its profits back into its operations. Wal-Mart said it’s working to accelerate the integration between Wal-Mart and Jet.com, and trying to take advantage of its scale in areas like shipping and sharing its product selection.

And arguably more importantly, e-commerce growth rose 29% as Walmart began to reap the benefits of its $3 billion acquisition previous year of jet.com, as well as of a massive overhaul of its marketplaces. But online sales still only account for a fraction of its total. The price to earnings growth is 5.91 and the price to sales ratio is 17.

The balance sheet health of any company plays a key role in its ability to meet its obligations and maintain the faith of its investment base. MKM Partners set a $72.00 price objective on shares of Wal-Mart Stores and gave the stock a hold rating in a research note on Saturday. Aerospace sales for 2016 were $406.5 million, down 1 percent from 2015.

The department-store industry has been especially hard hit.

Wal-Mart paid $6.2 billion in dividends during the fiscal year. Excluding certain items, earnings per share were $1.30.

T-Mobile US, Inc. (NASDAQ:TMUS) last announced results for quarter ended on 31 Dec 2016, disclosing EPS of $0.45 The reported earnings per share topped the analyst’s consensus by $0.15 with the percentage difference between estimated and actual earnings arriving at 50.00%.

In its fourth quarter and year-end earnings report Tuesday, Walmart said online sales increased 29 percent in the us and 15.5 percent globally. It was the biggest gain since the third quarter of 2012.

But those investments have paid off for its US business, which recorded its ninth straight increase in quarterly traffic. Shares of Macy’s rose 3.7 percent, while Home Depot advanced 1.9 percent. The company expects earnings in the range of 90 cents to $1.00 per share.
