State officials press ICE for information about raids

California legislative leaders on Monday demanded detailed information from the Trump administration on immigration arrests and raids in the most populous US state, amid growing concern that agents are targeting non-criminals for deportation. “The fact that you’re not a priority does not exempt you from the potential of enforcement”, the official said. “The president, with malicious intent, is attempting to destabilize our nation and communities by breaking up families through deportation and detention”.

They also have the leeway to detain those who have merely been charged with a crime, or have done something for which they could be charged.

It goes on to state that PUSD “is a diverse school district in which 4,952 students speak at least one of 38 languages in addition to English”, and that of the almost 15,000 students, 8,263 are students of color and 1,466 are of Hispanic descent.

“Under the Obama administration, ICE had their hands tied”, said Spicer. “We did not sign up to be ICE agents”, said a chief in Massachussetts.

Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, faulted the White House for failing to clearly specify in the DHS memos that dreamers are a low priority for deportation. Researchers observed expedited removal proceedings in several states and found that immigration officers frequently skipped legally required steps, which it called an “alarming” trend.

Losing that workforce could shift up to 61 percent of US fruit and vegetable production to other countries because of labor shortages, the American Farm Bureau Federation said in 2014. He described a heightened sense of urgency as his diocese investigates what its collective response should be. “We need to move as fast as these executive orders are moving. Basically all I’ve done is keep my promise”. Obama’s aggressive prioritization of criminals for deportation means that there might not be enough of them to deport to appease Trump’s base.
