Colorectal Cancer Cases Surge Among Younger Adults

It’s a worrisome trend American doctors documented this week, but the phenomenon is occurring in Canada, too.

The Florida native had gone in because he felt pain in his lower abdominal area while bicycling. In fact, for some cancers such as colorectal cancer, we have highly effective methods to prevent the cancer or to catch it at an early and highly treatable stage.

“I was 100 percent lucky”.

“I don’t plan to have cancer ever again”, Adams said.

The race auto driver also doesn’t usually talk about his personal life, but he is making an exception in the coming weeks.

Val Walsh Haines adds, though, that if you are over the age of 50, or if there is a history of colorectal cancer in your family, you should schedule a colonoscopy.

A colonoscopy procedure reduces the risk of developing colorectal cancer by more than 90 percent, by screening for and removing polyps before they have an opportunity to develop into cancer. In the USA three in 10 rectal cancer diagnoses are in patients younger than 55, the “sobering” findings suggest.

Feb 28 Colon and rectal cancer rates among younger adults are on the rise in the United States, suggesting the need for earlier screening, USA researchers said on Tuesday. For people aged 40 to 54, the rates increased between.5 percent and one percent from the mid 1990s to 2013.

It turns out that both groups are experiencing a sharp rise in colon and rectal cancer rates-and, reports The New York Times’ Roni Caryn Rabin, the trend is fueling a new debate on when young people should be screened. By 2013, that rate had doubled, a change of more than 2% per year over that time. These screening tests have not been deemed practical for younger groups.

Meanwhile, the proponents of the new study recommend that the age for colorectal screening for people with average risk be reconsidered.

“Our finding that colorectal cancer risk among millennials has escalated back to the level of those born in the late 1800s is very sobering”, Siegel said.

Overall, CRC rates have been declining since the 1980s thanks to increased awareness and accessibility to screening.

“There’s a lot of information available to the community about breast cancer, but you don’t often hear about colorectal cancer”, says Imad Shbeeb, M.D., medical director, Colorectal Surgery Program, MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute, Long Beach Memorial. “Do the right test for you”.

“Some of the other risk factors for colorectal cancer include obesity, physical inactivity, things like that so as we see rates of diabetes, heart disease and other things that have shared risk factors rise, then you’re going to see colorectal cancer rise also”, says Mary Charlton with the American Cancer Society.

Siegel said she was surprised and concerned by the results. “What your family might not know is that Ontario has some of the highest rates of colon cancer in the world”. Marshall doesn’t expect screening to be seen as practical for younger people. The fact that these two cancers are becoming a problem that can compare to such a insane time period in history is awful.

“I’ve heard stories of young people having symptoms for literally years”, she said.

Talk to your health care provider today about getting checked for colon cancer with a take-home fecal occult blood test (FOBT) kit. Doctors recommend doing it once every one or three years.
