Beauregard was reportedly set off by a family argument and was also intoxicated and suicidal, he said.
Police armed with rifles fanned out near the university to look for Justin Beauregard, 29, after his mother called police around 6:30 p.m., reporting her son was armed and upset.
A 29-year-old Fitchburg man is facing multiple charges after forcing Fitchburg State University into a lockdown for hours on Thursday.
University spokesman Matthew Bruun (broon) says classes don’t begin until September 3 and most students haven’t arrived.
Beauregard was taken into custody without incident, Giannini said.
The man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and firing a weapon near a dwelling.
Beauregard is slated for arraignment in Fitchburg District Court on Friday.
