Beauty And The Beast sets records locally and worldwide

Emma Watson reportedly earned $3 million (£2.4 million) for playing the role of Belle in the Disney live-action remake. The 1991 film won two Academy Awards and was the first full length animated film to be nominated for Best Picture. This remake of the 1992 animated film, which won Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Song, will have Guy Ritchie directing.

Duaij Al-Khalifa Al-Sabah, a board member of the operator of 11 of Kuwait’s 14 cinemas, National Cinema Company, was quoted as saying a newly edited version of the film could be in cinemas later this week.

Walt Disney blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast” will be released in Malaysia this month without any cuts, the company said on Tuesday, after censors had earlier asked for the removal of a “gay moment” in the movie.

Such technology has helped catapult Beauty into IMAX history books.

Internationally, the film has secured its’ position as one of the top 10 openings of all time, achieving USD$350 million at the global box office till date. Yes, Watson is superb as Belle (this movie is so much more than just “Hermione and the Beast“), but the actor’s mannerisms and performance makes you feel like you’re watching the cartoon come to life. Its North American total now stands at $165.6 million on a $25 million budget. The event was received so positively the theater chose to do something similar for “Beauty and the Beast”. That tops the $166 million March opening “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” scored just a year ago (with no gay characters, either), and gave the musical the seventh-highest domestic opening of all time.

It made US$13.2 million, bringing its gross to US$133.1 million.

Fifth was Lionsgate’s “The Shack”, with Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer, the story of a man who, after suffering a shocking personal tragedy, receives a mysterious invitation to go to a remote cabin deep in a forest.
