During his stay in South Korea, Yun is said to hold meetings with major presidential hopefuls, and their key diplomatic and security advisers, the sources said.

The regime “has the will and capability to fully respond to any war the USA would like to ignite”, it added.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons program has entered a “new phase”, with the country having doubled the size of its uranium-enrichment facility in recent years, Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told The Wall Street Journal.

During his visit to South Korea last week, Tillerson declared Washington would drop the “failed” approach of “strategic patience” with Pyongyang and warned that USA military action was possible. There are some reports that the North has one, but this isn’t verified. While these remarks are likely created to send a warning to and to put pressure on China and North Korea leading up to Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the resulting chaos seems to be hitting South Korea harder than China.

As Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has traveled through Asia over the last few weeks, he has offered a murkier stance on his department’s position on North Korea.

China, which borders North Korea and is an ally, considers the installation a tactical move to give the USA the ability to knock out Chinese missiles in the event of conflict. “These aren’t missile tests, they are military exercises”, Lewis wrote in Foreign Policy. After years of China turning a blind eye to sanctions violators and keeping the unsafe North Korean regime alive and its leaders well fed, now a new American administration is saying enough with the current policy of “strategic patience”.

Now the USA and South Korea are conducting annual joint military exercises that appear to be dress rehearsals for a pre-emptive strike against North Korea, which would come in response to a threat.

The backlash has also hit tourism as package operators have been required to avoid South Korea. So Chinese credibility on North Korea leaves something to be desired. “Our military is preparing for the possibility of provocation”, the MND said.
