And Julie Elliott, MP for Sunderland Central, said: “My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with those affected by the Westminster attack”.

MP Chi Onwurah tweeted: “As I left Parliament a police officer apologised for keeping us waiting”.

The assailant – identified by Scotland Yard as United Kingdom native Khalid Masood – careened through the area at about 2:40 p.m. local time, hitting dozens of pedestrians before crashing into the gate outside the Palace of Westminster.
