VENOM #6 is the latest chapter in one of the greatest comic book rivalries of all time: Spider-Man and Venom.

Then the company attempted a reboot with Andrew Garfield taking over the role in The Amazing Spider-Man. A Venom film that doesn’t include the web-slinger. In many stories featuring Venom, the creature finds its way to hosts who have an overwhelming desire for revenge, imbuing them with the superhuman abilities to have vengeance on those who wronged them, while simultaneously pushing them to the brink of their own sanity.
Just a few weeks ago, Sony announced that they would be releasing Venom for an October 2018 release. “The planned Venom and Black Cat and Silver Sable films are all part of Sony’s own shared universe, not spin-offs of any existing films”.
The recent trend of successful R-rated superhero films (see: Deadpool and Logan), and those films’ relative separation from the movie universes they come from, mean this could be an indication that Sony will be trying something more adult of its own with Venom.

The Spiderverse is the brainchild of producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who have been involved with Sony’s Spider-Man movies since the beginning (Arad used to run Marvel, in fact) but were taken out of the equation for Spider-Man: Homecoming in favor of Marvel’s Kevin Feige. And as for the rating, while it fits the character of Venom, it does seem worryingly reactionary. The success of Deadpool and Logan surely helped inspire Sony to make such a decision. However, Collider warns us that nothing is set in stone just yet, and the studio could change their mind. That assertion comes with a lot of qualifications, but also makes sense given both the character in play and the current superhero sub-trend. Their answer? An R-rated Venom movie. For the time being, it is also still in question as to whether the “Venom” origin will be that of the comic book, as well as, if it will be told in a sequential manner. The film is now slated for a 2018 release, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to take place anywhere near Marvel’s film universe.
