Trump lets states block some Planned Parenthood money

Now states have the freedom to spend their Title X money on comprehensive health clinics that better serve all women’s needs, like pre-natal care, which a recent investigation revealed is almost impossible to receive at Planned Parenthood clinics.

The law signed Thursday by President Trump that allows state’s to block federal funds for Planned Parenthood won’t affect blue states like CT. But of the broadcast networks, NBC was the only one to mention the breaking news.

In reality, federally defunding Planned Parenthood - as the GOP proposed to do in their failed health care bill - actually means preventing people who rely on it from accessing health care.

Former President Barack Obama signed a law in the final days of his presidency that said states can only block funding from family planning facilities if the clinics can’t provide key services.

“In our Immokalee Center in particular, in Collier County, we actually provide no abortion service in that clinic”.

Similarly, Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said the Trump administration should build on Obama’s order, “instead of enacting policies that take us backward”.

Southwest Florida could see a big cut in funds to Planned Parenthood.

Saying the rule usurps states’ rights, Republicans argued local lawmakers should decide how healthcare money is distributed.

NARAL communications director Kaylie Hanson Long criticized Mr. Trump for signing the measure in an event not open to cameras.

Planned Parenthood has slammed the legislation as a “dangerous” plan to restrict women’s access to health care. The bill’s passage was secured when Vice President Pence, who tried to defund Planned Parenthood as governor of IN, cast the tie-breaking vote IN the Senate to approve the legislation.

Attacking Americans’ access to health care is not popular for Republicans, and this is a bad move the resistance will fight hard to make them regret. The publication later noted that “since Title X money is distributed through grants to states, they have the power to set criteria for recipients”. “We are grateful that the Title X bill the president signed today finally allows states to withhold Title X funds from abortion providers”.
