Bayern’s Neuer out for rest of season with foot fracture

Bayern saw midfielder Arturo Vidal sent off for what looked a harsh second caution to go into extra time with just 10 men.

“The (red) card for Arturo wasn’t a card and then the two goals from Cristiano are offside so clearly we are not happy”, said Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti. We wanted to qualify and this gives us a lot of rage, that a match of such intensity can be decided by the referee.

Ronaldo was in an offside position when he received Sergio Ramos’ pass and appeared to bring the ball down with his arm as he fired under Manuer Neuer to put Real ahead on aggregate in what had been an enthralling quarterfinal second leg in Madrid. Vidal was fortunate not to have been shown his second yellow card earlier, in the 48th minute, for a challenge on Casemiro.

Monaco and Juventus booked their place in the last four on Wednesday night, while city rivals Atletico Madrid are through after seeing off Leicester City.

Atletico also made it to the semifinals by eliminating Leicester 2-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in Tuesday’s other quarterfinal, second-leg match.

Bayern Munich must finish out their season without their starting goalkeeper.

But Bayern can take hope from the fact that they can still turn the season into a domestic success with two titles.

“Since he’s gone to Real Madrid he’s contributed enormously to everything they’ve done but he’s living more off moments rather than a contribution through a whole 90 minutes”.

It is not the first time the Bernabeu natives have booed Ronaldo and he grew increasingly desperate to find the net with a series of wild efforts, including at one point ignoring strike partner Karim Benzema to go for goal himself, infuriating the home crowd. “I think the team deserved to go through”.

“I am sad that I will not be available to the team for the season finale”, the Germany keeper told Bayern’s website.

He sustained the injury in extra time during Cristiano Ronaldo’s third goal of a wild-back-and-forth and is expected to be out for eight weeks.

The penalty was awarded after a foul by Casemiro on Arjen Robben.

The German champions had been beaten on their previous four trips to Spain without even scoring a goal. He turned towards the stands in celebration before putting his finger to his lips after being the subject of jeers during the first-half.
