It is unclear how serious a demand that is, but at the very least, cutting taxes and overhauling the system to the extent the Trump administration wants is going to require lengthy negotiations and compromise, and the final outcome is far from assured.

“We are a poor state”, Bailey said.

But Christie said he supports Trump’s plan to repatriate funds and slash the corporate tax rate.

The AMT affects just 5 million tax filers in the US, including Trump himself.

Eighty years ago, Americans had to deal with a one-page tax form with 24 lines and only a few instructions. Moreover, “instead of a single form, the IRS now has 199 tax forms on the individual side” of the tax code. Small businesses that account for their owners’ personal incomes would see their top tax rate go from 39.6 percent to that corporate tax rate of 15 percent.

Other Republican plans have advocated allowing businesses to deduct the cost of investments as soon as that cost is incurred, rather than making them use lengthy depreciation schedules to stretch out those deductions. “Not a surprise that companies leave trillions of dollars offshore”, he said. Trump’s plan also mentioned a proposal in the tax code to help parents with child care, a policy first suggested by Ivanka Trump, but there aren’t any specifics as to what that will look like. Under the president’s plan, they would pay a lower rate of 15 percent. These are key Republican goals that would require lawmakers to eliminate or reduce precious tax breaks enjoyed by millions of Americans.

President Trump doesn't have to publicly disclose his tax returns now or ever. But some members of Congress can if they want
