Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Surface Pro 5 Tipped for a Surprise Release Date

At this point, the most realistic guess is that we’ll finally see the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 tablet.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 5 will reportedly be launched at the Surface event in Shanghai on 23 May.

But one known attendee is Microsoft VP and the father of Surface, Panos Panay, who tweeted about the event with the Surface hashtag.

Of course, a new Surface Pro 5 can’t singlehandedly salvage dipping revenues, but it stands to help Microsoft make the Surface Pro line relevant, and the machine can rival Apple’s new MacBook Pro line directly. There are also reports that claim that the list might also include Microsoft Surface Book 2 as well as the eagerly awaited Microsoft Surface Phone. And yet, it’s shaping up that way.

“…you might expect to see an update to the Surface Pro 4 coming soon”.

The choice of Shanghai is curious given Microsoft’s historical preference for NY where it launched the Surface Pro 4 in October 2015, Surface Laptop and Surface Studio all-in-one. The Surface 3, the current model, is exactly two years old today.

It added: “Powered by Windows 10 S, Surface Laptop has up to 14.5 hours of battery life* to take students through their day and is built to give students the same great performance through four years of college and beyond”.

Unfortunately, Microsoft did not reveal anything about the devices that will get announced at the event.

Meanwhile, tech blogger Paul Thurrott posted on Twitter that the rumored Surface Pro 5 will still have the Surface Connect power connector that features a magnet to connect into the device’s power port. We haven’t heard much more on the subject since those images surfaced.

Microsoft also wants to make sure that educators have access “to their… most-used applications…” Panay credits himself as being the creator of the Surface series of devices, so it would be fair to assume there will be another new Surface device on the way. This could also extend to Cortana through other interfaces like the Harmon Kardon speaker tease we saw last fall.

Microsoft is pretty consistent with its Surface Pro pricing structure, so it’s doubtful there’ll be any surprises with the cost of the Surface Pro 5.

Probably the most important thing for consumers to understand is that Windows 10 S – announced by Microsoft this week – is not an upgraded operating system but a more streamlined, or “stripped-down”, version targeted primarily at the education market.
